Tips and Tricks to Eating Gluten Free at Disney World

Updated: Aug 6, 2023

Going gluten-free at Disney World can be a real rollercoaster of emotions. On one hand, you're at the happiest place on Earth, surrounded by Mickey-shaped everything and endless food options. On the other hand, you're trying to avoid gluten like it's the plague. But don't worry, I'm here to help you navigate the gluten-free landscape of Disney World with a little bit of humor and a lot of hunger.

  1. The Search for Gluten-Free Buns: Let's start with the basics. If you're in the mood for a classic Disney World burger, finding a gluten-free bun can be like searching for a needle in a haystack. But once you find one, it's like hitting the gluten-free jackpot. Just remember, these buns are a precious commodity, so guard them with your life. Many fast service restaurants offer gluten-free buns as an alternative to burger or hot dog buns (it just may not be listed on the menu).

  2. The Allergen-Friendly Menus: Disney World's allergen-friendly menus are like a treasure map for gluten-free dining. Just make sure to bring your magnifying glass, because the print is smaller than Mickey's shoes. But once you find what you're looking for, it's a gluten-free feast. Many restaurants have gluten-free and allergy friendly menus listed on their digital menus which are accessible within the Disney World App. However, just because a restaurant doesn't have a gluten-free menu listed online, that doesn't mean they don't have available options. Always be sure to ask a hostess or someone at the restaurant if there are gluten-free options if you are unsure.

  3. The Snack Game: Snacking is a big part of the Disney World experience, and there are plenty of gluten-free options to choose from. Just don't expect to find gluten-free Funnel Cakes. Those are reserved for the gluten-full folks. But there are plenty of Mickey-shaped rice cakes, ice cream bars and gluten-free popcorn to keep you satisfied.

  4. The Table-Service Restaurant Experience: Dining at a table-service restaurant at Disney World is like a fairy tale come to life. But for the gluten-free folks, it can also be a little intimidating. Just remember, the chefs at Disney World are like magic makers, able to whip up gluten-free pasta, pizza, and even gluten-free dessert options like cake and ice cream. Again, just because you weren't able to find a gluten free menu online doesn't mean that the restaurant doesn't have gluten free options. The servers and chefs at Disney are accustomed to accommodating all kinds of dietary restrictions and are going to be able to work with you to provide something no matter your allergen or sensitivity level.

  5. The Special Requests: If you have a specific dietary restriction, don't be afraid to make a special request when making your dining reservation. The Disney World chefs will work with you to create a delicious and safe meal. Just don't ask for gluten-free Pixie Dust. That's not a real thing. Always be sure to tell your server of any allergies and if needed, you can consult with the chef to ensure all ingredients and possible cross contamination is addressed.

Eating gluten-free at Disney World can be a bit of a challenge, but with a little bit of humor and a lot of patience, you can still have a magical time. Just remember, the real magic at Disney World is the gluten-free food options that will make you feel like royalty. So, dig in, and enjoy the gluten-free ride!
